Book Review: The Four Hour Body

by admin on 10/04/2012

This book came to me at exactly the right time. I had hit a plateau; I couldn’t lose weight or if I did it would come back on. I was eating relatively healthily and exercising 4 times a week.  I just could not understand why my weight wouldn’t go away. This book educated me and made me see my body in a different way.

The Four Hour Body has got things moving. It is early days still, as it has only been 3 weeks since I started following this book, but I am so impressed by the results so far that I really want to share this book with everyone around me. The reason I am so impressed is the simplicity of what you need to do to lose weight. Other programs make you work hard, consume your time or are SO complicated that you just give up after a week. The The Four Hour Body is really simple, so simple. There are no heavy exercise routines, just a focus on eating right and doing the minimal amount of the most effective exercises out there.

The 4 hour body is written by Tim Ferriss, an entrepreneur and author of the best seller the Four Hour Work Week. Ironically enough, I read the Four Hour Work Week 2 years ago and it has been my bible for the past two years, but I had never gotten around to reading the The Four Hour Body. I am so glad I did.

Four hour workweek and Four hour Body - Tim Ferriss

First of all, let me warn you, The Four Hour Body is 600 pages long, but you don’t need to read more than 100 pages to get started. Tim Ferriss actually tells you not to read the book from cover to cover, but to be absolutely honest I couldn’t help myself. Initially I had bought it as an ebook and I read it from cover to cover in 3 evenings. I couldn’t put it down! Once I finished it I ended up buying the book just to be able to read over sections and take notes etc.

I really want to share the key factors of this book with you to help you lose weight too, but first promise you will keep an open mind. When I first started reading this book, I couldn’t believe what I was reading and in fact I even held off from blogging about it for a couple of weeks because I needed to try it to believe it. I’m convinced it works and I’m ready to share it.

The The Four Hour Body makes you feel like a complete idiot for:

  • doing useless exercise,
  • buying stupid pieces of pointless exercise equipment
  • and for following stupid diets which leave you moody and hungry

In three weeks I have lost 1.9 kgs (4.18lbs) by following this book to the T! It has not been difficult for me, and it has not taken hours of my day.

The Four Hour Body introduced me to ‘The slow carb diet’, in which there are 5 very simple rules.

  1. No white carbs/starches ( pretty much a no brainer)
  2. Stick to the same meals and repeat them over the week
  3. Do not drink calories
  4. Do not eat fruit
  5. Enjoy a cheat day (eat everything you want for 24 hours, but start with a high protein breakfast and a glass of juice)

Following these rules you should lose a substantial amount of weight in 1 month.

There are a couple of extra things that you will find in the book, for example:

  1. Having breakfast in the first 30 minutes of waking
  2. Eating beans in every meal
  3. Excluding dairy (to further increase weight loss)
  4. Eating 30g of protein per meal
  5. Vitamins you need to take

Meals are spread out simply as well:

  1. Breakfast
  2. Lunch
  3. Light dinner
  4. Dinner

All this is covered in two chapters! That is all you have to do to lose weight.

As I said before, I’m adding the recommended exercise regime on top to add tone to my muscles and abs. This means I work out for 15-20 minutes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That is it!

For people who are under 68kgs and already have a lower body fat % and are looking to go that one step further, there is a chapter of the book dedicated to ‘the last mile’.

There is also a chapter dedicated to 6 minute abs, of course there is only two exercises that you need to do.  There are chapters dedicated to how to dead lift a freakish amount of weight, 15 minute female orgasms, and how to train for a marathon in 12 weeks. All very interesting.

The book is all about less being more. Doing the right exercises and eating the right food and seeing positive results. Get this book now! You will not regret it, I promise.
